Should I Retake the DAT Before Applying to Dental School?

Retake for a reason
A DAT retake makes sense when the likely score gain changes your school list, offsets a real academic weakness, or fixes a section that is out of line with the rest of the file.
Retaking just because the number feels imperfect can waste time during a rolling admissions cycle.
Section imbalance matters
Admissions teams notice uneven scores. A strong AA with a notably weak science or reading section may still create questions depending on the school.
Before retaking, identify whether the issue was content knowledge, timing, fatigue, test anxiety, or a single section strategy problem.
Timing can outweigh points
A modest DAT improvement may not be worth a very late application. If a retake pushes submission far into the cycle, compare the expected score gain against the cost of delayed review.
For many applicants, the best move is either an intentional early retake or a confident submission with a realistic list.
